Residents are encouraged to recognize and celebrate our public works professionals virtually during National Public Works Week, from May 17-23, 2020.
In response to Provincial orders and physical distancing mandates, the City’s annual Open House in celebration of National Public Works Week has been cancelled.
“COVID-19 is transforming our world and affecting all of our daily lives, however; public works professionals continue to work on the front line and behind the scenes to provide essential services for the residents of Thunder Bay,” said Kerri Marshall, General Manager Infrastructure & Operations. “It is important to educate residents about public works and recognize the work these professionals do, especially during these unprecedented times.”
The City of Thunder Bay will celebrate National Public Works Week by building awareness of how our public works services and activities affect the community every day. Services include but are not limited to roads and bridges, street lighting, traffic control, water supply, water distribution, waste management, sewage collection, drainage, park operations, transit services and administrative functions. The virtual celebration and recognition will on take place on the City of Thunder Bay’s Facebook Page.
Residents are also invited to take part in the two National Public Works Week contests:
- Take a photo inside or outside of your home that highlights public works in Thunder Bay. Then upload it to social media (Facebook, Twitter or Instagram) using the Hashtag #TBayPublicWorks (contest is open to all ages)
- Children under the age of 12 are encouraged to draw or colour a photo of something related to public works, or a Thank You message to our public works professionals. Then parents/guardians are to take a photo of their child with their work of art and upload it to social media (Facebook, Twitter or Instagram) using the Hashtag #TBayPublicWorks
Prizes will be given out by random draw and winners will be contacted via social media. Residents are urged to practice physical distancing when taking photos outside of their home and are not to approach any public works professionals.
