JUNE 15, 2020

WHEREAS, Older Ontarians deserve to be treated with respect and dignity to enable them to serve as leaders, mentors, volunteers and important and active members of this province; and

WHEREAS, In 2006, the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse, in support of the United Nations International Plan of Action, proclaimed a day to recognize the significance of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue; and

WHEREAS, 2020 marks the 15th Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Its recognition will promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older adults; and

WHEREAS, Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario and the Community Elder Abuse Prevention Committee recognize the importance of taking action to create social change to prevent and raise awareness to educate older adults of their rights;

WHEREAS, Locally, seniors are at risk of being abused each year; and

WHEREAS, Social isolation is a risk factor of elder abuse in Ontario; and

WHEREAS, Preventing abuse of older adults will help improve their quality of life and allow older adults to continue to live a independently as possible and contribute to the life and vibrancy of Ontario; and

WHEREAS, Where there is respect there can be no abuse; therefore, residents of Thunder Bay are urged to Stop Abuse and Restore Respect.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Bill Mauro, Mayor of the City of Thunder Bay, do hereby proclaim June 15, 2020 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in the City of Thunder Bay.
