JUNE 19, 2022

WHEREAS, the World Health Organization (2006), the United Nations (2008), and the Canadian Government (2017), and the Province of Ontario (2021) have recognized Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) as a global public health priority and in order to raise awareness, designated the 19th day of June every year as World Sickle Cell Day (WSCD); and

WHEREAS, the Sickle Cell Awareness Group of Ontario (SCAGO) recognizes SCD as an increasingly important medical issue in the province; and

WHEREAS, over 14 municipalities across Ontario and 3 Canadian landmarks (CN Tower, Niagara Falls and CNE) will be illuminates to celebrate WSCD and bring awareness to the disease; and

WHEREAS, through education and awareness programs, SCAGO is doing its part to reduce the stigma and discrimination faced by the families with children, youth and adults living with Sickle Cell Disease.

NOW THEREFORE, I, the Mayor of the City of Thunder Bay, do hereby proclaim June 19, 2022 as “World Sickle Cell Day” in the City of Thunder Bay.
