Learning through experience. Welcome to the City of Thunder Bay's 2025 Summer Employment Program.  At the City of Thunder Bay, there are many opportunities available for students to gain valuable experience and skills.

Who is eligible?

Students who have been in full-time or part-time attendance (September to April) at school, college, university or other educational institution for the 2024/2025 academic year and will be returning to their studies for the 2025/2026 academic year. 

Students who are offered a position as a summer student will be required to show proof of completing the academic year (September to April) in 2024/2025 at a school, university or other educational institution.

Positions available

 Lottery positions

The Corporation of the City of Thunder Bay annually hires students during the summer months through a job lottery.  Students hired under this program will primarily work in general labour, clerical/office - general, golf services, tourism, and amusement ride/tour/camping.  The selection of students for these positions is based on a lottery system.  Applications received for these positions will be entered into a database (pool of applicants) based on areas of interest specified by the applicant.  When positions arise, applicants will be drawn by lottery from the database.  Only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

 Specialized positions

The Corporation has some summer positions that are specialized in nature, and require enrolment in a particular field of study.  These vacancies will be posted and will not be part of our lottery process.  To be considered for one of these positions, students must apply directly to a posted summer vacancy.

Apply for Specialized Positions

 Returning students (Rehires)

Returning summer students who are eligible for rehire (who worked for the City of Thunder Bay the previous summer), will be sent a letter by email. 

Eligible rehire students must complete their application online on the City of Thunder Bay careers site by February 28, 2025.  Paper application forms are not available this year.  The letter you receive will provide you the job title of the student position you held previously to assist in identifying the job posting you will need to apply to online.

Rehire students will be contacted by Human Resources when departments identify their staffing needs.
 

Please note:  A rehire letter nor your application guarantee you a 2025 Summer Student position.  Some summer student positions that were previously available may not be available in the summer of 2025.  In the event that your previous position is not available, you may want to consider applying for other summer student positions online on the City of Thunder Bay careers site.

Returning students:

Eligible rehire students must complete  their application online on the City of Thunder Bay careers site by February 28, 2025.  Paper application forms are not available this year.  The letter you receive will provide you the job title of the student position you held previously to assist in identifying the job posting you will need to apply to.
